Another Dip Back Into Changeling: The Lost (Since Folks Asked For It)

While a majority of the gaming supplements I've written over the years have been for general RPG genres, a not-inconsiderable amount of my work has gone into the Storyteller's Vault platform. The simple reason why is that I love the World & Chronicles of Darkness games, and I want to leave my own little mark on them. And while I had taken a break for financial reasons, I've been dipping a toe back into the platform to see how viable a return might be... and this time around I decided to write a companion piece to an older supplement of mine that was based on reader requests.

In case folks out there wondered, I do listen, and I do take feedback into account for my writing schedule.

But before I get into the meat of today's post, remember, don't forget to sign up for my newsletter to get all my updates right in your inbox. Also, if you've got a bit of spare cash that you'd like to use to help keep the wheels turning, consider becoming a Patreon patron! New Changeling (And Potential Future Additions)

For folks who missed the announcement, the supplement that dropped this past weekend was 100 Unusual Things To Find At A Goblin Market. This list includes bizarre items from Arcadia and the Hedge, unsettling things like a sealed jar of baby teeth, as well as physical embodiments of unusual emotions, or whimsical proverbs that have become actual merchandise (since any Changeling game is made better by the inclusion of a few puns). This was a topic that was oft-requested over on the Reddit forums, and it dovetails perfectly with one of my earlier supplements Buyer Beware: 10 Goblin Markets.

Seriously, go pick yours up today if you haven't yet!

In addition to being my favorite game in the Chronicles of Darkness (though Hunter is earning a lot of points with me, which is why I recently put out The Blade Itself for the new Corrupt Equipment mechanic), Changeling also has the second-largest number of supplements I've written for a single game line coming in at 11. And while I do have a few more rounds in the magazine as far as my ideas go, neither the current supplement, nor the previous book Like A Good Neighbor - Portraying True Fae in Your Chronicle have been burning up the charts of-late. There's some sales here and there, don't get me wrong, but it's definitely more of a trickle than it is a flood.

And while I've explained this in earlier posts, as well as in the video linked above, I'll restate it for folks who don't know. When I write Storyteller's Vault supplements I take a 50% reduction in up-front payment from my publisher. Given the word count for some of these, that's not a small sacrifice. To make up some of that amount in sales, I'd need to move at least 100 copies every time something new drops... and most of my supplements have struggled to even cross the 50 sale line to make it to Copper metal status of-late.

So, if you are someone who enjoys my Storyteller's Vault supplements in general, and my Changeling: The Lost work in particular, please take a moment to consider supporting me by doing the following:

- Buy any supplements that appeal to you.
- Leave reviews on the supplements you have (even just 5 stars and a "Good Job!" goes a long way).
- Leave comments on the video I linked telling me what Changeling supplements you'd like to see in the future.

As always, if buying new stuff isn't in your budget, I completely understand. But watching through the Discussions of Darkness series I have over on the Azukail Games YouTube channel is also a handy way to show your support, and to make sure that both my publisher and myself are hearing what you want!

Requests For A Changeling Story (And The A.L.I.C.E. Files)

On a final note for this week's update, I've recently launched a new audio drama channel on YouTube in partnership with Alice Liddell, and it's called The A.L.I.C.E. Files. I talked about the show more in-depth in the recent post The A.L.I.C.E. Files Is Here (And Will Soon Be Featuring Various Audio Dramas), but the short version is that the channel has an overarching story about the mysterious Carroll Institute, but a bunch of mini-stories about the different dimensions its agents have visited. A lot of those mini stories will be set in worlds that are inspired by (or come directly from) various tabletop RPGs.

I bring this up because one of the channel's big supporters, Sam Furlano, has specifically requested a Changeling story to be found in the files. Given that this falls under the Dark Pack agreement, this is absolutely something I could do... the question I have is whether it's something my readers/listeners out there want me to do?

So, if you'd like to have one (or maybe several) stories from the Chronicles of Darkness turn up in The A.L.I.C.E. files, here's how you can make your voices heard:

- In the comments section for the Trailer, tell us which Chronicles of Darkness setting you'd like to see stories from (preferably with 7 words or more, just to kick the algorithm into gear).
- Watch the rest of the videos, and upvote the ones you like!

It's still a new channel, so if there's any spike in activity we are going to notice it. And if there's enough folks to get us up to the 3,000 watch hours and 500 subscribers we need to hit our next goal? Well... then whatever it is you all ask for, I can promise you we're going to try to deliver on it!

(Lastly, if you've been waiting for updates on Windy City Shadows, I assure you have neither forgotten about it, nor abandoned the project. But there are only so many hours in a day, and I'm trying to free up as much time and energy as I can to complete as many projects as possible. Stay tuned for updates on that podcast as they develop!)

Help Azukail Games Defeat The Algorithm! (On YouTube)

The algorithm is the strange (and often malignant) god of the Internet age. It determines who lives, dies, who fails and thrives. Its decisions appear utterly random, and while it purports to be all-knowing, it never seems to actually be able to give you precisely what it is you want.

The truth is that the algorithm is a blind, idiot god. It sees everything, but truly understands nothing... but if you wish the blessings of the attention economy, it must lift you up as a creator. I talked about this more in-depth recently in As An Author The Algorithm Controls Your Fate (And It Determines Your Success), but this week I wanted to ask for your help in binding this technological force in order to use its power.

In short, the year is drawing to an end, and Azukail Games could use your help!

We won't be able to do this without you!

But before I get into the meat of today's post, remember, don't forget to sign up for my weekly newsletter to get all my updates right in your inbox. Also, if you've got a bit of spare cash that you'd like to use to help keep the wheels turning, consider becoming a Patreon patron! How You Can Pull Us Out Of The Mud!

So, full context for folks who haven't been around these parts before, I am one of the major contributors to the Azukail Games YouTube channel, which is where I host 3-4 regular shows with occasional dramatized stories from the TTRPG supplements I write. And while the channel got monetized earlier this year, it's been a slog for us to actually climb up the hill and get noticed.

And there are two major reasons for this:

- YouTube changes to the algorithm, which has taken our average views from 300-400 per video, to 100, and sometimes as little as 50 views per video.

- Subscriber slow-down. Unless your channel is constantly growing (or reaches a massive subscriber level in the hundreds of thousands) the algorithm hides/de-prioritizes your content, and doesn't share it with people.

The issue that we're running into is that while we can make all the videos we want, and try to share them around as much as we can, we can't tap a magical button and increase our views, or get people to subscribe to us as a channel. And that is what this post is for today... because we could really use a few helping hands before the year is over.

And best of all, it won't cost you a dime!

All we need folks to do is, basically, help us fight the two issues I mentioned above! So, if you want to help us keep pushing forward:

- Subscribe to the Azukail Games YouTube channel. For bonus points, hit the bell to be sure that you get notified so the algorithm can't just bury our videos when they drop.

- Watch our videos. If you're already subscribed, just take a few minutes out of your day to watch at least 1 video. Or, if you enjoy a particular show on the channel, watch one of the full playlists!

- For bonus credit, upvote videos you like, and leave comments of at least 7 words on them. Those are signals to the algorithm that a video is popular, and it makes a difference regarding how much attention our content gets. You could also share links to the videos on your own social media pages, which can have a surprisingly large impact.

And that's it!

My personal goal is to get the channel over 2,000 subscribers by Christmas, and we're currently at around 1,760. So if we can find about 240 folks, more or less, that growth will be a big help that will allow us to regain some of our momentum. And if we could also get a bigger percentage of folks to hit that bell and watch our new releases (as well as sharing older videos they think more folks should see) that would be huge for us. Because while the channel is monetized, it isn't exactly pulling down notable ad revenue... which is something you can help us do just by using your eyes and ears to send a message to the algorithm on our behalf.

Thanks for reading this far. This has been an ongoing project, and I have so many topics I still want to cover, and more involved videos I want to make. But to justify the cost in time, energy, etc., I'm going to need all the help I can get!

Updates On The Azukail Games YouTube Channel (And Our Progress)!

This week I wanted to give something of an update for my readers out there! While I've talked about this on both Facebook, and in my most recent newsletter, I don't want anything getting lost in the fickle tides of the algorithm, and I've got some exciting developments I wanted everyone to be aware of. So keep reading, and I'll get to it shortly enough!

We've been putting in a lot of work on this!

Patreon, Ko-Fi, And Getting Monetization!

So, first things first! As lots of folks know, YouTube altered their rules last year so that, in order to be approved for monetization (which is to say, you actually get paid some of the ad revenue on your videos, rather than all of it going straight into YouTube's pockets), you need to have 500 subscribers to your channel, and 3,000 hours of watched content in the past 365 days. At time of writing, we have 1,070 and change subscribers, and just over 2,500 hours of watched content... which means that another 500 hours will put us over the line, and allow us to finally start getting ad revenue from the videos we make!

That would be a huge boon all by itself, because right now none of the videos actually generate income for Azukail Games from YouTube. While there are ads on them, none of that goes to the company, which means the channel is not, currently, an income stream in this manner. And if we can start getting some of that cash to flow to the company, then it can start underwriting some larger, more ambitious projects. For those who didn't see the update on the channel itself, I talked about it back in May in the video below.

Another thing I mentioned in the video above is that Azukail Games now has its own Patreon and Ko-Fi accounts, and if you're feeling generous, don't be afraid to toss some coin over there! Now, I want to be clear, these are separate from my Literary Mercenary Patreon and Ko-Fi pages listed below, which go to help support these blogs. For those wondering why there are separate accounts, it's because I do not (contrary to a lot of common belief, it seems) run Azukail Games as a company, or a YouTube channel. Adrian Kennelly is the man behind that company; I'm just a writer and contributor who works for the enterprise.

Which is sort of the reason I want to see it grow... the better they do, the more of my shenanigans the company can publish and support for the entertainment of all of you out there!

For folks who are wondering why I don't have my own YouTube channel, I laid out the details on that issue a while back in Trying Out Rumble As A Platform For My Audio Dramas over on my sister blog The Literary Mercenary. The short version, though, is that even if I personally got the 500 subscribers and 3,000 hours needed to get monetized on my own channel, I couldn't get paid by YouTube because it requires a Google AdSense account, and Google blocked me from having one of these over a decade ago.

So in this case I'm going to remain a freelancer.

With that said, though, if the Azukail Games channel does get monetized, it's possible that I'll be able to start a bigger project that will be on multiple platforms, such as Spotify, in addition to just YouTube. If that's something you'd be interested in, then check out Windy City Shadows: A Chronicles of Darkness Podcast Proposal!

There are a lot of projects I'm starting to get excited about, but all of them sort of hinge on us getting the YouTube channel to a point where it's a legitimate earner, and not just a place for us to put our preview videos for the TTRPG supplements we put out. So if you want to help us get there, please subscribe to the Azukail Games YouTube channel if you haven't yet, watch our videos, and share them around so we can acquire the hours we need to blow past those goal posts, and really start revving our engines to make bigger, more involved stuff for you all to enjoy!

What Shows Would You Like To See on The Azukail Games Channel in 2024?

So, we're approaching the end-of-year wrap up. While I've still got plenty of stuff to polish off, edit up, and turn in, I'm trying to keep an eye on the calendar, and to figure out what I'm planning on doing for the coming year. While I've got quite a few TTRPG supplements planned, along with the full release of my first RPG Army Men: A Game of Tactical Plastic, I've been putting a lot of stuff out for the Azukail Games YouTube channel (which you should subscribe to if you haven't yet), and my hope is that I'll be able to really expand that in the coming year.

However, part of that is going to be up to you all! So before we ring in 2024, I wanted to test the waters, and see if I could get some thoughts from folks out there who regularly read this blog about what they'd like to see regarding the shows we have, and potential expansions in the coming year.

Because there's a lot of stuff in the works right now...

Before we get into the nitty gritty this week, don't forget to sign up for my weekly newsletter to get all my updates right in your inbox. Show #1: Discussions of Darkness

Going strong for just about a year now, the 19th episode of Discussions of Darkness should be up on the channel before the year is over, and I'm currently working on the 20th episode. That's something of a milestone, so I'm hoping to make it a little special.

A majority of the episodes have, thus far, been focused on advice for Storytellers who are planning on running a World or Chronicles of Darkness game, the big traps to avoid falling into, and some tips on how to really challenge your players, or to make the atmosphere of your game better. And while some topics seem to be more popular than others, I wanted to hear from my audience if there was anything you wanted to see covered in the future, or if you'd like to see me change-up the formula and try out different things.

For example, would you like to see something more scripted where my face isn't as present? Would you like some background music to go along with me talking? Should I bring in some mechanical topics, or review some products out there to give my viewers some insight into useful supplements for their games? Or would folks like to see me really sink my teeth into particular games within this setting, such as Changeling, Geist, Vampire, Werewolf, etc., and talk about topics specifically related to those games?

This last one might be important for the next section, as they might dovetail together quite nicely...

Show #2: Expanded Audio Fiction

Audio dramas are one of the oldest types of videos I've been making for the channel, and they also hold the top slot for most views something I've made has received. For those who are curious, my most-viewed piece at 1.6K is the Changeling: The Lost story The Butcher's Door. However, all of the audio dramas that appear on the Azukail Games channel are so small because they're the dramatized introductions to various TTRPG supplements I've written, which the company has published. They're meant to give the listener a peek into the world, and to figure out if this is something they'd like to get a copy of for their table.

However, over the past few years, several of my listeners have asked me why I don't make full-length podcast-style stories. And the answer is, quite frankly, money. However, if we can get the channel monetized (we still needed about 1,000 hours of watch time when I last checked in) that is something I'd love to dedicate time and energy to!

My original idea was to make a Dark Pack project for the Chronicles of Darkness, and to piggyback off of several of the shorts I've already made, and to use the series as a way to see what kinds of supplements listeners might want more of. If this is the first you're hearing of it, I suggested a Changeling season 1 titled Grim Promises in "Windy City Shadows," A Chronicles of Darkness Podcast Proposal, and then I recently followed it up with a more recent Table Talk post titled Dead City Blues: A Potential Second Season For "Windy City Shadows" for those who were interested in where it could expand to once the first season was done.

I must re-iterate that this project would be a huge undertaking. While I have plots and ideas, along with several other voice actors who've helped me out over the years, I have not written scripts or confirmed anything. Which means that if you'd rather see a fantasy audio drama series told in my Sundara: Dawn of a New Age setting, or you'd rather I continue on with some of my sci-fi audio dramas, that is still an option as well. And if that's something you'd like to see, then make your voice heard in the comments, and share the videos for the stories you'd most like to see expanded on in a big way!

And if you're someone who'd like to check out longer audio dramas by yours truly, make sure you stop in and subscribe to my Rumble channel The Literary Mercenary! I've been slowly adding content there for a while, and I've dramatized several short stories, along with using the channel as a back-up for my show Tabletop Mercenary!

Show #3: Tabletop Mercenary

Speaking of Tabletop Mercenary, this is my newest show on the channel. With the 3rd episode dropping last week, and the 4th one being chosen as I write this, the goal of this show is to pull back the curtain and talk about how the sausage gets made when it comes to being a professional TTRPG designer. And since I've been in the trade for about a decade now, I figured that I'd share what I know, and do my best to help folks out there avoid making the same mistakes I made earlier in my career.

This show is still in its infancy, and though I have a lot of topics to cover, I want to make sure that I'm answering the questions you all have in the audience. So, to that end, what is something you've always wanted to know about the TTRPG industry, but you've been unsure who the hell to ask about it?

While I've received some questions about crowdfunding (and I have an expert waiting in the wings to help me tackle that topic), along with some questions about intellectual property, there have been relatively few specific inquiries thus far. So whether you're wondering about whether or not you can write for a particular game, or use a particular system, or what sort of supplements work best in the market, my ears are open! Just leave a comment (preferably on the video itself, so my publisher sees them as well), and I'll make sure to bump up that topic in the script line!

And, once again, make sure you subscribe to my channel The Literary Mercenary on Rumble, in addition to the Azukail Games YouTube channel to stay on top of this particular show!

"Discussions of Darkness" a New Show on The Azukail Games YouTube Channel

Around this time last year I announced that I was finally going to be making some video content. This was partially due to the gentle prodding of a lot of folks who suggested that I needed to expand into that medium to reach more people, and partially because my main publisher Azukail Games thought it would be a good way to get additional eyes onto a lot of the content I was producing for them. That led to me working on teaching myself audio and video editing for the past year, and trying to find a presentation style and subject matter I'm comfortable with.

And now it's led to something entirely new... something that I've titled Discussions of Darkness!

Before we get into the nitty gritty this week, don't forget to sign up for my weekly newsletter to get all my updates right in your inbox. Also, if you've got a bit of spare cash that you'd like to use to help keep the wheels turning, consider becoming a Patreon patron!

Lastly, to be sure you're following all of my followables, check out my LinkTree!

How This All Got Started

Back in 2021 Azukail Games tapped me to start expanding the supplements I was working on to include the World of Darkness and Chronicles of Darkness settings. This started off with pieces like New World Nights: 100 Ghouls For The American Camarilla for Vampire: the Masquerade, as well as 100 Mourning Cant Dialects, Phrases, and Meanings for Changeling: the Lost. For nearly 2 years now I've tried to get at least one WoD or CoD project into the pipe for release every month, and this is in addition to even earlier projects I worked on with other publishers, such as my 100 Kinfolk series for Werewolf: the Apocalypse (available in a bundle with roughly 1,400 NPCs in it), as well as more general use pieces such as Deadly Country: 100 NPCs of Central Florida.

Needless to say, I've been spending a lot of time wandering the poorly-lit back alleys and dark corners of this particular setting. And this was why when Azukail Games approached me about making content for the channel, one of the things I wanted to do was create audio dramas based on the introduction fiction for my supplements, such as Missed Connections below, which is taken from my supplement 100 Resources and Rumors to Find on SchreckNet.

This particular video is from my Dailymotion channel rather than the Azukail Games YouTube channel, but I figured folks might enjoy the remastered edition of this little story.

Anyway, since I was spending so much time in these settings, I thought I'd go beyond just telling a few stories to get folks in the mood to play. I wanted to talk about what makes these settings unique, what some of the pitfalls are that come with playing in them, and to offer tips and tricks for players and Storytellers alike who are thinking about walking back into the strange side streets where the shadows are always darker, and the cracks run a little bit deeper.

That's where the idea of Discussions of Darkness came from; as a way to share the experiences I've had in these games with folks, and to hopefully help old hands and fresh faces alike really get stuck in before they start their next chronicles.

How You Can Help (And Influence) The Show Going Forward

At time of writing there are two episodes of the show on the channel, and a third one is currently awaiting editorial. And while I have a long list of topics I'd like to cover ranging from handling horror in dark settings, to politics or the lack thereof in a given game, to the commonly used ever-present-threat, I want to make sure that folks who are tuning in feel like the show is listening to their feedback and input.

If this sounds like something you'd like to help support, here's how you can do so without spending so much as a dime.

- Subscribe to The Azukail Games YouTube Channel (We just crossed 500 subscribers, but we need 1,000 for the channel to be considered for monetization)

- Watch The Episodes (I linked the first one above, but the second is below if you want to get something a little meatier, since it comes in at about 20 minutes)

- Share Them on Your Social Media (People are suspicious of creators who big-up their own work, and they're more likely to trust/watch something you share because you like it)

- Leave Comments (The algorithm loves comments and upvotes both, but more importantly I use comments to figure out what it is viewers want to see, and it will affect topics going forward)

My hope is that there will be enough folks who enjoy the show (and who help me keep the numbers up) that I'll be able to keep it going right alongside all the supplements I'm writing for use in the various different games attached to the setting. And everything from which games I talk about in detail (Changeling, Vampire, Mage, Geist, Hunter, etc.), to what kinds of advice I focus on, to the mechanics of different editions, will all be decided by you, the listeners.

So whether you're a long time player or Storyteller in this setting, you're coming back after some time away, or you're coming in with fresh eyes, consider pulling up a chair for a Discussion of Darkness.

And for those who would like to see more involved, longer-form audio dramas, well, my hope is that a project like that will be possible in the future. More on that in Stories of Sundara, Tales of The World of Darkness, and More! in case you missed that update.
