What Mechanics-Based Supplements Would You Like To See For "Army Men"?

As regular readers know, my first RPG Army Men: A Game of Tactical Plastic was released earlier this year after a successful Kickstarter campaign. In this game players take on the role of a squad of soldiers fighting for one of the nations of the Plastos Federation as they attempt to defend their home from the incursions of the vespoids; gigantic, insectile creatures that have placed all the resinous persons under serious threat. In addition to that very hot war there are also Cold War tensions between many of the nations, there are terrorist organizations and criminal syndicates to deal with, as well as pieces of strange, alien technology that may be more than they seem at first glance, as well as plastic dinosaurs roaming the wilderness beyond the Federation's borders.

What I'd like to ask folks this week, since we're in our Crunch update, is what sort of mechanical supplements you'd like to see for this game in the coming months?

What do you need for resupply?

Exploits, Gear, And Creatures To Fear

Since Army Men initially dropped, three separate supplements have been released. The first, Army Men: Threat Assessments, is a collection of extra threats, creatures, and things that your troopers are going to have to deal with in the field. The second, Army Men: Medals of Honor, introduced the medals system as a way for you to recognize your troopers' accomplishments while on campaign, and to give your players things to strive for. And the most recent supplement, Ungentlemanly Warfare: A Baker's Dozen of Booby Traps, is full of deadly traps for Game Masters to put into the field for their troopers (or their enemies) to deal with. And if you keep your eyes peeled, the first of the Army Men missions should be coming out soon, with a short adventure set in United Polymeria!

However, because I wanted to focus this game on strategy, equipment, and abilities, I wanted to take a moment to ask folks in the audience... what would you actually like to see more of?

There's several options on the board!

So, I've had a lot of ideas for some things I'd like to expand for the mechanical side of Army Men for folks who want to see even more resources for the game. At the moment, though, the things I'm currently looking at are:

- Additional Missions: Though A Night At Breckon's Beacon isn't out at time of writing, my plan was to get at least 4 more mission guides written and going through editorial in the near future. However, if there's more demand for missions than there is for other options, they're going to get bumped to the top of the list!

- Army Men: Weapons Locker: While not a finalized title, the basic idea behind this series would be, as the title suggests, to be to put more weapons, armor, and general equipment into the hands of your troopers. There might even be some items with the Experimental tag attached to them, in the event folks want a little more of the sci-fi nonsense I've hinted at with this game.

- Army Men: Enhanced Exploits: The exploits system is the main way players pick up and add abilities to their troopers. While there's a variety of them in the base book, this supplement would give you new trees to draw from, and provide additional paths you could use to develop your character in your coming campaign.

- Army Men: Soldiers of Fortune: While originally the title I was going to use for a larger softcover release (which this might still be, if there's enough enthusiasm), the idea behind this supplement was to add something of an A-Team vibe to the game by including the option to play as mercenaries. This would provide players with new classes to choose from, new exploits, fresh backgrounds, as well as a slew of additional items, and likely a Reputation system for acquiring new gear in the field, or before a mission (since mercenaries may not have access to the armories of a nation's standing army).

These aren't the only ideas I've had for supplements to expand the game world, but at time of writing these are the four directions I've narrowed likely expansion to. So if you're a fan of Army Men, then make sure you make your voice heard so I know what sort of content you'd like to see from me going forward!

And if you'd like to know more about the game and setting, make sure to check out the new series Tactical Plastic Report over on the Azukail Games YouTube channel. I just got it off the ground, so now is the perfect time to make your voice heard on what subjects you'd like to see covered!

You Can Weigh-In On Future Supplements For "Army Men: A Game of Tactical Plastic"!

It's been several months since my first RPG, Army Men: A Game of Tactical Plastic went live for sale! Since then we've seen the release of two supplements for it already; Army Men: Threat Assessments (which is full of additional monsters and creatures for your troopers to content with), and Army Men: Medals of Honor (which introduces the Medals System for rewarding players for their deeds done on the field, and introducing additional abilities). And while there's still one more supplement that should be coming out from Azukail Games soon titled Ungentlemanly Warfare: A Baker's Dozen of Booby Traps, I'm currently loading up my queue with fresh projects.

So I wanted to share some of the things that might be on the horizon for the resinous peoples of the Plastos Federation!

So grab your copy, and check it out for yourself!

Missions, Armory Updates, and More!

I recently pu up a poll on the Army Men Facebook group (which you should join if you want to stay on top of the game's developments, and make your voices heard!), and I tested the wind a little bit as to which direction folks were hoping to go. However, if you're here reading this update, feel free to leave your thoughts in the comments section below, or to reach out on social media to let your thoughts be known!

Top Option: Quick Play Scenarios

Even in the early stages of development, I knew that Army Men was going to need missions as one of its supporting supplements. Because while all the pieces are there for Game Masters to start running stuff in the world, nothing would flesh it out quite like providing some scenarios to help folks get a feel for play. It's one reason that I made sure the base book came with a starting mission, as well as some suggestions for additional hooks! However, I also know through putting together adventure modules like The Price of Iron (an introductory module about dark fey and strange promises), as well as The Curse of Sapphire Lake (the hate-child of Friday the 13th and Beowulf), adventure modules are one of those things that are a tough sell for the public... not only that, but they take a rather large amount of energy on my part as a creator. A time and energy-intensive project with minimal sales prospects is not a great way to light the fire of enthusiasm.

However, a suggestion that was made (and which folks seemed to support) was the idea of quick play scenarios for the game.

The idea is pretty straightforward. For those who haven't come across this kind of scenario before, it acts as a bare bones setup for an adventure, giving the general tools to the Game Master including maps, important NPCs, point buy layouts for gear (to represent standard, hard, and easier values). Game Masters are given a set of mission parameters and victory conditions, and then the squad is turned loose to see who wins, and who dies. All in all, where a standard adventure module will be anywhere from 7k to 10k words, a quick play scenario will probably only be 2k to 3k words... just the facts, and that's all you need!

To give this a real test run, I'm considering writing between 3 and 5 of these scenarios. That would give you enough to level up your squad (as you are supposed to level every 3 missions), or to level them twice if we include the introductory mission in the base book!

Secondary Option: Expanded Armory

While I did kick around several other options, including more detailed mission modules, guides to the various nations and their cultures, as well as expanded Exploits list, the second-largest amount of votes went to supplements that would expand the armory for players. It makes sense, after all, since the tools players bring onto the battlefield are one of the biggest resources they have to determine their success or failure.

Now, the base book already has a respectable amount of weapons, armor, and extra tools for players to utilize... however, I did have a number of ideas for supplements I could put together. The first would just be something like Army Men: Weapons Locker, with more options to go along with the standard, modern-ish feeling that most of the base book's weapons boast. This would have additional weapons, armor, and most importantly things like expanded grenades, along with the possibility of different ammuntion types that could give players a fresh, but limited, resource that would be appropriate to particular situations.

A second supplement, perhaps something like Army Men: Slings and Arrows, would deal with medieval weaponry and older types of weapons you might still find in the setting (either because the troopers in question are so old they remember when these were standard-issue, or as an extra challenge for missions where modern weaponry isn't as readily available, and players need to go Predator on the vespoids).

A third supplement, which could expand on the Experimental weapon descriptor found in Medals of Honor, would be full of high-tech (though largely untested) equipment options created in the laboratories of the various member nations of the Plastos Federation. In addition to the electric rifle found in that supplement you might find gyrojet weapons, cloaking generators, personal force fields, self-healing materials that repair damage to weapons and armor, or even stranger items!

It's All Up To You!

I've beaten this dead horse a lot recently, but it's something I like to remind people of. When it comes to the books I write, the games I create, and the supplements I work on, I'm not just doing this for my own personal enjoyment. While I like my job, I'm guided by what you, the readers and players out there, actually want to see from me! If there's something you all want to see more of, then that's the thing I'm going to pursue... and if there's something that doesn't have the support, then I can't really afford to spend my time tinkering with it.

So keep that in mind before you weigh in on what you'd like to see when it comes to Army Men. Because if you really do want to see this game expand, and you're looking forward to playing some missions at your own table, raise your voice and let me know! But if this isn't a game you're going to pick up, or if none of these sound like things you're interested in as a gamer, then I don't want to be working off bad data from what my audience wants from me going forward.

Expanding "Army Men" Into Other Genres

For folks who haven't heard, a lot of my content is currently on-sale over on Drive Thru RPG thanks to the GM's Day Sale going on right now! While 144 of my titles are on-sale right now, today I wanted to talk about Army Men: A Game of Tactical Plastic. Because while the first supplement Army Men: Threat Assessments is already out, and I'm hard at work on Medals of Honor (which should be ready for release this spring), I do have some longer-term goals for this game... goals that will be much easier to reach if I can get some of you fine folks all aboard the bus in order to help me keep putting together new stuff for this RPG!

I can see the next objective from here!

Mercenaries, Gangsters, Psychics, and Spies!

While Army Men: A Game of Tactical Plastic is a fully functional RPG base book that one can grab and use as it stands, it was always meant to be a spring board to jump out to other genres of play. Because while the base game is meant for squad-based play where you and your fellow troopers are given missions and assigned objectives to complete, I know that isn't the game for everyone out there.

However, it was never intended to be the only style of game play supported by this RPG... I just couldn't fit all the options into the base game!

I've got plans... just need a little help to make them happen...

So what does the future hold, assuming I can find enough rope to play out for this game? Well, in addition to more gear, guns, vehicles, classes, monsters, and mission packs, I'd also like to expand the genre to some of the following areas:

- Army Men: Soldiers of Fortune- Rather than being regular members of the military, the party operates as hired guns. A more traditional "adventuring" route, this would come with new classes and subclasses, and a Reputation metric to replace the load out typically given to soldiers by the military they serve. This would, ideally, have a kind of A-Team vibe, where players could come from anywhere, and get involved in nearly anything!

- Army Men: Game of Shadows- The intelligence services of the Plastos Federation, and all of its member nations, fight their wars in alleys and backrooms, using whispers, rumors, poisons, seduction, and other tools of the espionage trade to complete their missions. Whether you want to do something wild and crazy like James Bond or Mission: Impossible, or you'd rather stay grounded and serious, taking inspiration from WWII and the Cold War, this book would expand your toolset, and likely delve deeply into the shadow warriors, paramilitary forces, and other aspects of the setting to give them even more teeth.

- Army Men: Gangsters and Gumshoes- The streets of the Federation may seem clean, but every town has its dirty business. From back alley runners to street corner dealers, everybody answers to someone. Whether your squad are an up and coming group of hoods looking to break into the big leagues with a heavy score, or you're a pack of private eyes who are out there doing what the cops can't (or just won't), this particular game would have a smaller focus than the grand wars seen in the previous two. Players would be solving cases, getting into mysteries, pulling jobs, and trying to make heads or tails of what's happening while trying to stay out of jail, and avoiding floating face down in the river.

- Army Men: Weird War- While we have a couple of very sci-fi additions in Threat Assessments, those are just an appetizer for the nonsense I'd love to add in with Weird War. This book would get into the strange implications of what the vespoids truly are, where they came from, and what some of the other forces operating behind the scenes are who may have instigated this whole conflict for their own benefit. Who built the bizarre Mekanauts that have wiped out entire regiments before finally being destroyed? What are those strange lights in the sky some airmen have reported? What kinds of experiments go on in the backrooms of government laboratories? From psychic classes and advanced weaponry, to the implications of aliens, intelligent machines, and more, this one will cover a wide variety of sci fi nonsense that would greatly expand antagonists, as well as resources for players.

What Do You Want To See Most?

If you read this far in this week's entry, I want to know from you... what do you want to see in Army Men going forward? Do you have a particular genre of the four above that really speaks to you? Or is there one I didn't mention (such as the Old West for folks who want to use those plastic cowboy toys)? Alternatively, would you rather see mission packs so you could run your players through some preplanned battles, NPC lists to fill out the roster, or just more interesting locations to beef up what's on the map?

It's still early enough in the game that we can go in all sorts of directions, but we need to hear what you want before we can pick the proper direction! So please leave your thoughts in the comments below, or reach out to us on social media. Lastly, don't forget to pick up your copy of Army Men: A Game of Tactical Plastic and Army Men: Threat Assessments while they're still on-sale this week!
