Another Dip Back Into Changeling: The Lost (Since Folks Asked For It)

While a majority of the gaming supplements I've written over the years have been for general RPG genres, a not-inconsiderable amount of my work has gone into the Storyteller's Vault platform. The simple reason why is that I love the World & Chronicles of Darkness games, and I want to leave my own little mark on them. And while I had taken a break for financial reasons, I've been dipping a toe back into the platform to see how viable a return might be... and this time around I decided to write a companion piece to an older supplement of mine that was based on reader requests.

In case folks out there wondered, I do listen, and I do take feedback into account for my writing schedule.

But before I get into the meat of today's post, remember, don't forget to sign up for my newsletter to get all my updates right in your inbox. Also, if you've got a bit of spare cash that you'd like to use to help keep the wheels turning, consider becoming a Patreon patron! Also, be sure you're following all of my followables, check out my LinkTree.

New Changeling (And Potential Future Additions)

For folks who missed the announcement, the supplement that dropped this past weekend was 100 Unusual Things To Find At A Goblin Market. This list includes bizarre items from Arcadia and the Hedge, unsettling things like a sealed jar of baby teeth, as well as physical embodiments of unusual emotions, or whimsical proverbs that have become actual merchandise (since any Changeling game is made better by the inclusion of a few puns). This was a topic that was oft-requested over on the Reddit forums, and it dovetails perfectly with one of my earlier supplements Buyer Beware: 10 Goblin Markets.

Seriously, go pick yours up today if you haven't yet!

In addition to being my favorite game in the Chronicles of Darkness (though Hunter is earning a lot of points with me, which is why I recently put out The Blade Itself for the new Corrupt Equipment mechanic), Changeling also has the second-largest number of supplements I've written for a single game line coming in at 11. And while I do have a few more rounds in the magazine as far as my ideas go, neither the current supplement, nor the previous book Like A Good Neighbor - Portraying True Fae in Your Chronicle have been burning up the charts of-late. There's some sales here and there, don't get me wrong, but it's definitely more of a trickle than it is a flood.

And while I've explained this in earlier posts, as well as in the video linked above, I'll restate it for folks who don't know. When I write Storyteller's Vault supplements I take a 50% reduction in up-front payment from my publisher. Given the word count for some of these, that's not a small sacrifice. To make up some of that amount in sales, I'd need to move at least 100 copies every time something new drops... and most of my supplements have struggled to even cross the 50 sale line to make it to Copper metal status of-late.

So, if you are someone who enjoys my Storyteller's Vault supplements in general, and my Changeling: The Lost work in particular, please take a moment to consider supporting me by doing the following:

- Buy any supplements that appeal to you.
- Leave reviews on the supplements you have (even just 5 stars and a "Good Job!" goes a long way).
- Leave comments on the video I linked telling me what Changeling supplements you'd like to see in the future.

As always, if buying new stuff isn't in your budget, I completely understand. But watching through the Discussions of Darkness series I have over on the Azukail Games YouTube channel is also a handy way to show your support, and to make sure that both my publisher and myself are hearing what you want!

Requests For A Changeling Story (And The A.L.I.C.E. Files)

On a final note for this week's update, I've recently launched a new audio drama channel on YouTube in partnership with Alice Liddell, and it's called The A.L.I.C.E. Files. I talked about the show more in-depth in the recent post The A.L.I.C.E. Files Is Here (And Will Soon Be Featuring Various Audio Dramas), but the short version is that the channel has an overarching story about the mysterious Carroll Institute, but a bunch of mini-stories about the different dimensions its agents have visited. A lot of those mini stories will be set in worlds that are inspired by (or come directly from) various tabletop RPGs.

I bring this up because one of the channel's big supporters, Sam Furlano, has specifically requested a Changeling story to be found in the files. Given that this falls under the Dark Pack agreement, this is absolutely something I could do... the question I have is whether it's something my readers/listeners out there want me to do?

So, if you'd like to have one (or maybe several) stories from the Chronicles of Darkness turn up in The A.L.I.C.E. files, here's how you can make your voices heard:

- In the comments section for the Trailer, tell us which Chronicles of Darkness setting you'd like to see stories from (preferably with 7 words or more, just to kick the algorithm into gear).
- Watch the rest of the videos, and upvote the ones you like!

It's still a new channel, so if there's any spike in activity we are going to notice it. And if there's enough folks to get us up to the 3,000 watch hours and 500 subscribers we need to hit our next goal? Well... then whatever it is you all ask for, I can promise you we're going to try to deliver on it!

(Lastly, if you've been waiting for updates on Windy City Shadows, I assure you have neither forgotten about it, nor abandoned the project. But there are only so many hours in a day, and I'm trying to free up as much time and energy as I can to complete as many projects as possible. Stay tuned for updates on that podcast as they develop!)

The A.L.I.C.E. Files Is Here (And Will Soon Be Featuring Various Audio Dramas)!

I mentioned earlier this year that I had a secret project I was working on, and that I would provide more information when it was ready to be revealed... well, that time is now! I've started a new YouTube channel in partnership with Alice Liddell called The A.L.I.C.E. Files, and it's going to be an ongoing audio drama with two different layers. On the one hand there's the tale of a young woman who ends up working for the mysterious Carroll Institute as a witness cataloger, and she gets drawn deeper into the bizarre nature of the organization's endeavors to explore parallel dimensions through the unique device known only as the Rabbit Hole. On the other hand, though, there are the stories in the files themselves; agent reports in the form of dramatized fiction from Alice, myself, and from a variety of other authors.

And at least some of these stories are going to take place in various tabletop RPG settings, which is why I'm giving the project a shout out in this section of my blog.

And if we're going to make this project soar, we're going to need your help!

Before we get into the nitty gritty this week, don't forget to sign up for my bi-weekly newsletter to get all my updates right in your inbox. The Settings I Have Ready To Go

While I'm writing, recording, and editing the meta stories about Alice, the Institute, and the dark mysteries that lurk within its walls, I do have a variety of stories that are ready to go, and which will begin appearing on the channel very soon! Some of these include:

- An Exalted story (which falls under the Dark Pack rules)
- A Warhammer 40K collection
- Some Lovecraft/Call of Cthulhu short horrors
- A Deadlands-inspired tale from my short story collection The Rejects

In addition to these settings (and several original stories of my own that either have been, or will be, dramatized), I also have some plans to adapt my story Devil's Night, which was the first story for my group's run through the Pathfinder adventure path Hell's Rebels.

In case folks were interested in more tales from Golarion.

I wanted to take a moment to ask my readers, however, which settings they'd like to see featured on the show. While not all of them will be feasible, I want to at least look into it, and see which stories I could spin into at least one episode of the show... though popular stories are much more likely to get sequels as long as folks keep putting their eyes and ears on what we're doing!

What Makes This Channel Different Than Azukail Games?

As regular readers know, I've been making audio dramas for the Azukail Games YouTube channel for a while now. Which, speaking of, go check out my videos over there and subscribe to the channel is you haven't done so already!

However, there are two things that make The A.L.I.C.E. Files different from what I've been doing for Azukail Games. The first is that while my Azukail Games stories are sometimes connected, generally they're stand alone stories, or they're only loosely related because the shorts come from the introductions to my TTRPG supplements that I write for the company. They're meant to draw in the viewer/listener, and to get them interested in seeing more... they're basically an RPG commercial with voice acting.

The second thing that's different, though, is the length of the average story over on the new channel. For example, consider the trailer:

It comes in at 7:33. It's short, sweet, and to-the-point, while also making sure that the listener gets a full story to draw them deeper into the Institute. However, the first episode of the show is over 20 minutes, and Dead Man's Bluff (which should be dropping next Friday) is also well over the 20 minute mark.

So, this new channel won't just have an ongoing connected story to follow (both in terms of full meta episodes, but the introduction snippets for unrelated stories will also feed into the ongoing narrative), but it will give us room to tell longer, more involved stories in ways that I haven't done before.

What We Need From You As Listeners

First of all, we aren't asking for money. We're very new, and we're trying to earn it ourselves. However, YouTube doesn't share any of the ad revenue with creators until they have at least 1,000 subscribers to their channel AND 4,000 hours of watched content (which is over 11 watch hours per day for an entire year).

And just to add insult to injury, those watch hours can't be from people with ad block. Because our first week had 65 hours of real watch time according to our metrics, but YouTube only counted 4 of those hours as real for the purposes of our monetization.

So... you see the sort of hill we're going to have to climb here.

What I need from you, dear readers, is simple, straightforward, and best of all, it's free! Just:

- Subscribe to The A.L.I.C.E. Files on YouTube (we're 1/5 of the way to the subscriber goal)
- Watch the videos we have up (preferably with your ad block turned off, if you can)
- Upvote the videos, and leave comments of at least 7 words on them (it's for the algorithm)
- Share our videos and channel on your own social media pages (we need a bigger reach)

That's it!

My experience with getting the Azukail Games channel monetized is that what we really need is folks to show up, listen, and share if we want to get our numbers up. Because if something went truly viral today (let's say the trailer garnered oh... I don't know... 20K fresh hits who all watched the whole thing, and then at least half of those people watched episode 1 in its entirety), we'd basically be monetized by the time Monday rolls around.

But that kind of success doesn't just happen out of nowhere. It happens because an audience watches, comments, and shares videos, boosting the size of the potential audience, and getting more folks to walk in the door. So if you're one of the folks out there who has enjoyed my audio drama work, and you'd like to see me really expand on the stories I tell (and you're enjoying a broader cast of voice actors), then follow the steps above to help make it happen!

There Is A Bonus Option, As Well...

I said above that we aren't asking our listeners for money, and I mean that. At the moment we are very focused on getting the channel monetized so that we can just focus on telling good stories.

With that said, though, if you do want to monetarily support us, check the video descriptions because we will have links to the books we're dramatizing stories from. Whether it's my own book The Rejects, one of Alice's short story collections, or even novels like Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, buying from the links we have will help ensure that the channel makes some money while we struggle up the hill to force YouTube to actually share some of the profits our work is generating.

Thanks in advance to all who take the bonus option!

What Made Your Changeling What They Are? (Changeling: The Lost)

"You ever wonder about us?" Killian asked. The hulking wolf's nose leather twitched as he sniffed, and he idly drummed his claws on the bench's metal supports.

"No," David grunted, pushing the bar up inch after trembling inch. The ogre sucked a breath over his jutting lower jaw, and lowered the weight one more time.

"Seriously, though," Killian asked, his golden eyes falling to David's elbows as he placed his own furry hands just below the bar. "We were taken on the same day, kept by the same Keeper, treated almost the same... why are we so different?"

David snarled, shoving the weight up, and slamming it into the rack hard enough to make the plates bounce. He sat up, snatched his towel, and wiped at his face. He stood, blotting out most of the light on that side of the room as he did so.

"Almost ain't the same," David said, pointing at the bench. "Your turn. Twelve reps."

We are what we are made to be.

Nature Versus Nurture

While I took a bit of a break from the Chronicles of Darkness, I did have a Changeling: The Lost release a little while back with Like A Good Neighbor - Portraying True Fae in Your Chronicle. However, that dip back into the waters got the gears in my head turning, and it made me ruminate on something that I feel a lot of players overlook when it comes to their character's Seeming in these games.

Because yes, mechanically, you choose a Seeming that gives you access to the powers and abilities you most want for your character. However, what turns a human into a particular kind of changeling isn't just about who they are as a person, and what is revealed about them by fae magic and the Wyrd; it's also (at least in part) dependent on their treatment at the hands of their Keepers.

You merely carve away everything that isn't the statue inside the marble.

For example, say a Gentry has two people who are very alike before them; socially adept humans who are good at making friends, each of which has a force of personality all their own. One of them, as expected, ends up as a Fairest... but the other doesn't. The other finds themselves becoming a beautiful Beast. While it might be due to an inherent difference in the two people (the former attempted to be an equal participant in conversations and riddle games, while the latter merely fawned over the Keeper to try to keep themselves safe), it could also be the way the Gentry treated the two of them. The former's behavior meant the True Fae was intrigued and engaged, verbally sparring with the mortal, the conversations rubbing off on them. The latter, though, was merely giving passive attention, and treated more like a yapping dog than they were someone deserving of the Gentry's attention and respect, minor though it is.

Say the Gentry punished two of its kept humans. They were very similar, but one was punished for actions they actually committed, making it clear they were being trained for a purpose. That leads them to become a hound; strong and fierce, but reacting without thought to commands that have been drilled into them. The second person, though, is punished cruelly, or even unnecessarily, twisting the knife in their wound. That hatred, that malignance, leads them to become an ogre, instead.

And even if a True Fae is purposefully reducing different people into the same kind of changeling, who is to say the methods and treatment don't produce different results? Like how you might take two ingots of the same raw material, but turn them into radically different alloys? Even a pair of twins, put into different scenarios and situations, would end up with utterly unique fates. For example, the True Fae might take one brother, and keep him on a mountaintop where the wind eventually blows him away one layer at a time, until wind is all he is, turning him into a gusting gale. The other brother, just as stubborn and just as willful, might be buried deep beneath the earth. And the longer he pits his will against the rock and mud, the more he becomes a part of the earth, until his skin becomes craggy, and his blood slows to thick, pumping clay.

Thematic Interactions Are What Make Changelings Unique

While it's perfectly within the bounds of the game to have a character who just doesn't remember how they became what they are, or to have someone who was simply cursed or changed by a True Fae into the form they have now, digging a little deeper into why and how your character became what they are can add extra elements to their story. Did the Gentry merely reveal their true nature, imbuing it with magic, making this form an even truer version of who the changeling was in their soul? Were they twisted out of true as the Gentry attempted to force them into a shape and being that didn't fit them? Or did they, through their own actions and behaviors, end up sealing their fate?

Again, these aren't necessary parts of a character... but they can act as seeds that will grow throughout a chronicle, giving you deeper interactions, and more impactful story!

And, lastly, I'd recommend picking up your own copy of Like A Good Neighbor, as well as one of my older supplements 100 Frailties to help you build these necessary weaknesses into your player characters and antagonists alike!

I would also recommend checking out the following free articles about this game:

Mr. Nowhere Talks About Radio Free Fae in This Latest "Changeling: The Lost" Video Essay

There are those among us who have been to a world that doesn't exist... a place mentioned only in fairy tales. A place ruled by petty tyrants and mad gods, most never get the chance to escape... those who do, and who manage to make their way back to the real world, find themselves changed. With their transfigured forms and broken minds, they have become something else... something other. These Lost band together, though, and they fight for themselves and their communities.

The voice of these communities, though, often comes from the members of the Winter Court. An irony for the Silent Arrow, they use secretive broadcasts to help keep others like them infored. Known as Radio Free Fae, these broadcasts are the early warning systems of many freeholds.

And this week, Mr. Nowhere finally breaks his wall of silence to tell you all about this operation.

Welcome back, my friends and fellow travelers on the trods...

A Glimpse Into What's Coming For Windy City Shadows

For folks who've been watching my videos over on the Azukail Games YouTube channel, you've likely heard me talk about my upcoming Windy City Shadows podcast project. And while I talked about it a while back in Ask Me Anything About "Windy City Shadows" A Chronicles of Darkness Podcast, the general gist is that season 1 is going to be what you'd end up with if John Wick was a changeling.

But the host of the show who handles our intro and outro is the Radio Free Fae DJ known only as Mr. Nowhere... and if you haven't heard his previous broadcasts, he's the voice of the latest video essay that just dropped on the channel!

While I'm still elbow-deep into writing season 1 (working on episode 4's script at the time of writing), I've wanted to start dropping occasional pieces of lore, and to give listeners a preview of some of the characters they're likely to meet as the season unfolds... and I thought I'd start with this simple video essay featuring our first host.

And if you want to help me keep making videos like this, while also revving us up so that I can get this podcast off the ground, please do the following things:

- Watch this video essay, upvote it, and stay until the end for the secret outro, and leave the suggested message in the comments section

- Share this blog entry, and/or the video, on your own social media! Particularly on Facebook, as the site has made it exceedingly difficult for me to actually share links to anything

And, lastly, if you want to catch a few more glimpses of Mr. Nowhere in some published work I've put out, I'd recommend picking up the Changeling supplements 100 Mourning Cant Dialects, Phrases, and Meanings as well as 100 Strange Sights To See in The Hedge.

Would You Like To Hear Broadcasts From Mr. Nowhere? (Changeling: The Lost Updates)

As most of my regular readers know, I'm currently elbow-deep in working on a fiction podcast for the Chronicles of Darkness setting. This will be a continuation of many of the short fiction pieces that have already appeared on the Azukail Games YouTube channel, and there will be returning voices (as well as returning characters) from some of those stories!

However, the host of the show is someone a lot of you may have missed. The faceless, enigmatic voice on the airwaves, Mr. Nowhere. While there's little enough known about this elusive Winter Courtier, Mr. Nowhere could be making an appearance in other videos quite soon... assuming, of course, regular readers are interested to hear what he has to say.

Before we get into the nitty gritty this week, don't forget to sign up for my bi-weekly newsletter to get all my updates right in your inbox. Also, if you've got a bit of spare cash that you'd like to use to help keep the wheels turning, consider becoming a Patreon patron! Also, be sure you're following all of my followables, check out my LinkTree.

Where You Could Hear Mr. Nowhere (Cast Your Vote Today!)

While Mr. Nowhere is going to be the voice of the intro and outro of each episode (as well as the commercial break in the middle of each episode, assuming we can find ourselves some proper sponsors!), this podcast is going to take a lot of behind-the-scenes work and time to pull together. As I mentioned in previous updates, it's likely going to take me months just to finish writing all the scripts, firming up the details, etc., before I can start getting people together to record.

But to sort of warm up the crowd and get people interested, I had a couple of smaller videos I'd like to make. My hope is that they'll catch some people's attention, and get more folks to tune-in when the full podcast starts dropping episodes.

One of my first thoughts is to put together a second video essay for Changeling: The Lost that's all about Radio Free Fae. This Winter Court organization is used to broadcast coded messages, and to share information among the Lost in ways that can be vital to the community... and Mr. Nowhere is a member of this particular organization, covering the Windy City as well as the greater Chicagoland area with his broadcasts. As such, this video essay would have a much more meta tone than previous ones have, allowing a character from the setting to give the audience the run down of who he is, and what the organization he represents does.

However, that's just one possibility for where folks may hear Mr. Nowhere next!

In addition to that video essay, I was also thinking of providing some short character bios in order to give listeners insight to season 1. These might be particularly useful for those who are not Changeling: The Lost players, and who would like a brief cliff notes dossier so they aren't left scrambling to pick up context of what's happening when the show starts. From discussions of major players in the seasonal courts that make up the changeling power structure in the city, to persons of note, to insights into recent events for the main cast, I figure this might work as a gentler introduction to the upcoming story.

Lastly, Mr. Nowhere is likely to be heard on the official trailers I want to make for season 1 of Windy City Shadows. I'm planning on making somewhere between 1 and 3 of these videos which will be short little samples of what's to come that will (fingers crossed) get more listeners interested in the show as we get closer to its official debut.

What Is Something You'd Like To Hear Next?

So, out of all those options, what is something that appeals to you most?

Would you like:

#1: At least one video essay voiced by Mr. Nowhere as he leads us deeper into the Chronicles of Darkness setting, and Changeling: The Lost in particular?

#2: Character bios as Mr. Nowhere gives new readers and listeners a cliff notes version of the setting of Windy City Shadows?

#3: Trailers for Windy City Shadows to draw folks into the setting?

Now, it's likely that all three of these projects are going to happen at some point. However, where I put my energy and time will be determined by you, the readers and listeners! So if one of these categories has a distinct lead over the others, that is the one that's going to go at the top of the to-do list when I manage to free up time in the production schedule.

So please, leave your vote down in the comments below, on social media where you came across this page, and in the comments section of The Liminal Horror of Changeling: The Lost so that I and my publisher can see them, count them, and tally them! And if you want to help push projects like this up in the algorithm, and make it easier for me to keep getting ideas like this greenlit, subscribe to the Azukail Games YouTube channel, and hit that little bell to get all of our updates while you're at it!

Lastly, if you enjoy the little samples you've seen of Mr. Nowhere and you'd like to grab a few supplements I've released that have featured sneaky references to him or his activities, you could also grab these supplements I've written for Storyteller's Vault!

- 100 Mourning Cant Dialects, Phrases, and Meanings: Delving into the secretive communication styles of the Winter Court, this supplement helps you really take on the feel of clandestine operatives.

- 100 Strange Sights To See In The Hedge: The Hedge is a bizarre place full of impossible creatures and landscapes... and if you look closely, you might catch sight of a signal tower, swallowed in the greenery.

- 100 Rumors To Hear At The Freehold: Whispers are as deadly as daggers among the paranoid Lost... and very few people can collect more rumors than Winter.

Pentex, Windy City Shadows, And Closing In On Goals For Azukail Games

There's been a lot of nonsense going on behind the screen recently, so I wanted to take this week's Table Talk to bring some folks up-to-date, and to provide something of a progress report on two current projects. So if you've been hoping for some news on some irons I mentioned I had in the fire, then this should answer some of your questions. And if you're only just now joining me, well, keep reading because I'm going to do my best to provide any necessary context as we go along!

Now, let's get into the details!

Lastly, for hundreds of extra articles on gaming, weird history, and for more free fiction, check out my Vocal archive, too!

First and Foremost, Progress And Pentex

For those who don't know, I've been making a lot of videos for the Azukail Games YouTube channel for the past several years. Originally used as a place to host the preview videos for several of the company's TTRPG supplements, I expanded the offerings with several shows like Speaking of Sundara (where I talk about my RPG setting Sundara: Dawn of a New Age), Discussions of Darkness (where I talk about the World and Chronicles of Darkness settings), Tabletop Mercenary (where I talk about the business of TTRPGs), and now Tactical Plastic Report (where I talk about my RPG Army Men: A Game of Tactical Plastic), along with a slew of audio dramas taken from TTRPG supplements I've written.

I've been fighting an uphill battle to try to get the channel monetized for a while, and we were well on our way this time last year... until the algorithm change last Autumn. That absolutely cratered our progress, and sent us several rungs down the ladder. As of my last check-in with Adrian, though, the channel is at 2,825 hours of the 3,000 hours we need to hit in order for us to become monetized.

That means we only need 175 hours of additional watched time on our videos, which is the closest we've gotten so far in this entire saga! It's still a huge chunk of watch time for a relatively small channel, but I'm hoping that I can get some folks currently reading this to help us reach that goal.

And this is where Pentex comes into the picture.

Since I've wanted to revisit it ever since I worked on this supplement.

As I mentioned a while back in my post Video Essays On The World and Chronicles of Darkness... What Would You Like To See?, I've had a couple of concepts floating around in my head for a little while. One of those is one that I'm tentatively titling, "The Problem With Pentex," because while I love it as an antagonist, and a thematic part of the World of Darkness, there is (in my opinion) something that makes it fit strangely with the rest of the setting. So I wanted to outline the position I'm taking, and then provide some suggestions to fellow Storytellers for how I would handle Pentex, were I to alter the setup and origin of this faction (or just expand it out to encompass a bigger picture).

I've also got a fun little tongue-in-cheek commercial that will be appearing in the middle of the episode. While I'm definitely taking the piss, though, Dubby is a real product, and I do really get a cut of the proceeds if you choose to try it out. All the info for this powdered energy drink is in the video below, so give this a watch if you're looking for a chuckle, or if you want to be one of the first to check out the closest thing to a sponsor any of my videos have had yet!

Up Next, Windy City Shadows!

I tend to bring up this project once a month or so, but it's a big deal to me, and it's something I've been kicking around for a while that feels like it's close to finally moving beyond the idea phase. While I have a full Ask Me Anything about the project, posted below, the elevator pitch is that Windy City Shadows is going to be an audio drama podcast set in the world of the Chronicles of Darkness. Each season will focus on different spheres of this world, but each season will build off the story of the one that came before, dealing with the ripples of those stories as they move across the various supernatural communities. Season One, Grim Promises, can best be summarized as "modern fantasy John Wick," and for a textual rundown check out the blog post Windy City Shadows: A Chronicles of Darkness Podcast Proposal.

For folks who have wondered why I first proposed this podcast a year ago, but nothing has been released for it, well, it's because even if art is offered at no cost to the customer that doesn't mean it's free to make. One of the major things I needed to have in place to help underwrite the project was that the Azukail Games YouTube chanel (where the podcast is going to be backed up and available for folks to listen to in addition to other podcast platforms) needed to be monetized so that these episodes were seen as something with earning potential, instead of just one more thing floating out there on the vast sea of the Internet.

However, since we're slowly closing in on that goal, I have started laying the groundwork for the show's production! During the month of October I laid out the skeleton for season one's 10-episode plan, and I have a script for a preview that I'll be putting together and releasing both on the Azukail Games YT channel, and on the Windy City Shadows podcast channel once we cross that finish line and get the YT channel monetized. And while there are currently some extra projects on my work desk, my hope is to start writing scripts for the show before the year is over, and to begin recording once my current housing situation is settled next year (for those who don't know, I reside in government-subsidized housing, which makes renewing my lease a less-than-straightforward process).

Though I feel like a broken record saying it, this may be some folks' first time seeing these words. If you're interested in Windy City Shadows as a project, or just seeing me continue to make videos in general, please help me smash that goal this month! Like and subscribe to the Azukail Games YouTube channel, but even more than that, go through the archive and watch our videos! Leave comments on the ones you like (or, hell, the one's you don't like), and consider sharing some of them around on your own social media pages. The algorithm is stamping down harder than even before, and the only way we can get our stuff seen at all is by folks like you helping to boost our signal.

Thank you in advance... 175 hours is a lot for a relatively small channel of our size, but with your help hopefully we can surpass it before Thanksgiving comes and goes!

Why I Will Have Fewer Community Created TTRPG Products Coming Out

Readers who've been following my release schedule have likely noticed a pattern for the past few years. I usually come out with two releases in any given month, and the first will either be a system or genre-generic supplement (like my recent 100 Body Mods and Augments For Your Sci Fi Game), and the second release will be something for an existing TTRPG setting made using a community content platform (like this week's recent release 100 Mediums, for use in the Chronicles of Darkness setting).

Seriously, check it out if you haven't yet!

Generally speaking, I've been doing things this way for years now as a way to stop my brain from getting too stuck in any particular rut. Some changes have been going on behind the scenes at Azukail Games, though, and I wanted to take a moment to make folks aware of them.

Before I get into the details, though, don't forget to sign up for my weekly newsletter to get all my updates right in your inbox. Also, if you've got a bit of spare cash that you'd like to use to help keep the wheels turning, consider becoming a Patreon patron! Costs and Earnings

No one makes a good living writing for TTRPGs; if you are part of this niche publishing community, at least 60% of the reason is because you love RPGs. To put that into a numbers perspective, a general, professional rate of pay for a writer is usually considered between 4 and 6 cents per word, though some have said that should be up to 8 cents per word due to inflation. There are few RPG companies who can afford to pay that rate, and I can count on the fingers of one hand how many times I've earned that much (Paizo and Storm Bunny Studios top the list, for those who are curious). Often times RPG writers will be offered 1 cent per word, half a cent per word, or in a lot of cases no up-front pay at all, and just a portion of the sales of the product.

And though I've quoted this number before, roughly 80% of products that go up on Drive Thru RPG don't even move 50 copies. So it's very possible that you could spend weeks to months jamming out word count on something, only to receive $5 and a hearty handshake for all your work.

I've been there more than once.

To re-iterate something that a lot of my readers miss, I do not own or run Azukail Games; I am merely a contributor there. I receive a percentage of sales on my supplements as a royalty, and I receive an up-front fee as well. Up until recently this was 1 cent per word... but recently this increased to 2 cents per word for all supplements that aren't part of a community creation platform.

This leaves me with a choice as a creator, but it's one I want my audience to understand, and to be aware of.

Because I've put out a lot of community content over the past several years. From World/Chronicles of Darkness supplements, to Pathfinder Infinite pieces, to a few Call of Cthulhu splats (like my recent 100 Gangsters, Gun Molls, and Goons NPC list for games set in Arkham during Prohibition), it's at least 25% of my total archive of gaming products. And I'm not saying that I won't ever pen another supplement for these platforms... but given how expensive everything around us is getting, it is asking a lot for a creator to take a 50% pay cut to work on that kind of content.

Unless, that is, the creator is making up the costs on the back end.

This is where that royalty payment comes in...

Numbers talk in the publishing world, and when things get noticed it's more likely that those product lines are going to get expansions and extensions. So whether you want to see more of my WoD/CoD supplements, more Pathfinder Infinite products, or even more Call of Cthulhu stuff, the best way for you to help make that happen is to get a copy of them for yourself (they're only a couple of bucks, after all). And if you've already bought a copy, leave a review on DTRPG, Storyteller's Vault, or Pathfinder Infinite, and share the link on your socials so that other people can see the supplements you like. I'm doing everything I can to move copies as a creator, but user reviews are far more effective than even my best sales pitch out in the wilds of social media.

And, of course, the more sales something has, the more metal badges it earns, which ranks it higher and higher in the site's algorithm, which means more people are likely to see it going forward. So if you are one of those folks who wants to help make it tenable for me to keep making supplements on these platforms, consider checking out what I have already:

Those are, of course, just a sample of the 161 total products I have on DTRPG (as of time of writing, at least). And though I've said this before, I feel it's important to repeat this for anyone who hasn't heard it yet... my publisher pays attention to our numbers. When supplements get a lot of interaction, a lot of sales, notable positive reviews, etc., it becomes much easier to get more supplements like those approved. So if you see something you like, and you want to send me a message to make more of it, please do your part to help me reach fresh eyes, and new plateaus... because that is how decisions get made in publishing.

Also, Speaking of New Games...

While we're on the subject of games, audience reaction, and sending a message about what you want to see more of, my first full TTRPG "Army Men: A Game of Tactical Plastic" is available for pre-order on BackerKit! It made the funding goal on Kickstarter, but we didn't smash it hard enough to guarantee expansions, future supplements, and so on. If you want to help make sure that happens, though, consider pre-ordering your copy today, and telling your friends about this game.

And if you missed it when I was talking non-stop about Army Men, check out some of my earlier posts about it below!

Love Audio Dramas? The World of Darkness? Then Check Out Uncle Yo!

I've spent most of the last year or so elbow-deep in the World of Darkness. From my Changeling supplements like Buyer Beware: 10 Goblin Markets and 100 Gateways Into and Out of The Hedge, to my Vampire pieces like New World Nights: 100 Ghouls For The American Camarilla or the surprisingly popular 100 Resources and Rumors to Find on SchreckNet, or even a brief trip back into Werewolf with my supplement Evil Incorporated: 10 Pentex Subsidiaries, it's been one hell of a time re-familiarizing myself with one sphere after another. In addition to writing new supplements, though, I've also been making little audio dramas out of the fiction I've included with them. These are all on the Azukail Games Youtube Channel (which you should go subscribe to), for those who are interested.

That's a lot of work, and while it makes me want to spend my efforts on something longer-form in the World of Darkness, I just don't have the free bandwidth to do that at time of writing. However, while I try to spin it up, I would recommend that folks check out the Chroniclers of Darkness audio dramas by Uncle Yo!

Before we get into it this week, don't forget to sign up for my weekly newsletter to get all my updates right in your inbox. Also, if you've got a bit of spare cash that you'd like to use to help keep the wheels turning, consider becoming a Patreon patron!

What is The Chroniclers of Darkness?

The short version is that the Chroniclers of Darkness is a series of audio dramas set in the Chronicles of Darkness universe. Starting with Geist, it moves into Vampire, Changeling, Hunter, and there's even pieces with Mage and Promethean.

And if you're a fan of the Created, you know how rare it is we get content.

I got tapped into this channel thanks to some folks on a Changeling: The Lost subreddit, and I was really excited by what I found there. Though I haven't gone through everything, I did reach out to the channel's creator. Sadly, as of this time, he's moved on to other endeavors. So while the channel is going to stay up, it is very unlikely we're going to get much more from the Chroniclers of Darkness.

However, that does raise a question. Is this the sort of project you'd like to see me step into? Perhaps expanding the wanderings of my one-eyed ogre Jacoby into a full season of a story? Maybe digging more deeply into the doings of the Nosferatu hinted at in my SchreckNet story? Or maybe you feel that Mage, Promethean, or Hunter would simply be more exciting to see a story from?

Leave me some feedback, here or in the comment sections of some of my videos over on the Azukail Games YouTube channel! The squeaky wheel gets the grease, and when you tell me what you want you're a lot more likely to actually get it.

A Shout Out For Some Grim Dark Content, As Well!

In the event that you binge all of Uncle Yo's content (I recommend no more than half a season at a time, perhaps a few episodes before bed to really draw it out), there are two other channels I wanted to give a shout out to. However, these are more for my lovers of the grim darkness of the far future, though I find there's a lot of thematic overlap between the World of Darkness, and the world of Warhammer 40K in terms of themes, style, and tragedy.

That said consider taking a look at A Vox in The Void. With classic stories by authors like Lovecraft and Edgar Allan Poe in between the 40K content, there's a lot to enjoy on his channel, and he really makes content worth listening to!

And if that isn't enough content for your ears, consider taking a look at Cold Open Stories as well! A self-described community theater for the grim darkness of the far future, they've only been going for a few years, but they're getting more and more stuff worth listening to as time goes on.

Soft Power, And Winning in The World of Darkness

One of the major advantages of the World of Darkness (and its successor the Chronicles of Darkness) is that there is no way to "win" these settings in any definitive sense. No matter what threats you manage to deal with, or how many enemies you put in the ground, there are forces out there that are too big for you to handle individually. Things that are too powerful, too decentralized, or too all-encompassing to be slain with fang and claw, bullet and blade.

You can have victories, and you should. But the struggle will always continue on.

Because there's always one more hand to play.

However, something that both the World and Chronicles of Darkness settings emphasize that is often downplayed in other RPGs is the idea of victory through soft power. And since my 100 Mourning Cant Dialects, Phrases, and Meanings recently dropped for Changeling: The Lost, I thought I'd tell a story about a Winter Courtier of mine, and how his strategies went almost totally unopposed because no one saw the kind of game he was playing.

As always, if you want to stay on top of all my latest releases, don't forget to subscribe to my newsletter to get weekly updates! And as always, consider becoming a Patreon patron if you want to help me keep the blog going.

The Game of Whispers

Simon Blackridge was born into privilege, and raised by the cool professionalism of the servant class in the ivory towers of Chicago, Illinois. Maids and butlers, instructors and tutors left him a well-spoken but distant young man, who had more of a cordial than loving relationship with his parents. When his father died he tried to look mournful and introspective, because that was what was required of him. But he wandered off into the snow of the cemetery, and found himself in the Hedge.

It was through his wanderings, and his unfailing politeness, that he found himself in the court of the Snow Queen. The True Fae saw how this odd, distant boy had been formed, and took him beneath her wing. Under her tutelage his mind grew sharp, and his tongue grew cruel. Lights blossomed on his skin and in his eyes, and he took on the rainbow hues of the northern lights; beautiful, but cold, distant, and uncaring.

The last thing his Queen did was bid him to return to the world of mortals, and to find a place within the Winter Court. And to ensure he would be welcomed, she allowed him to think she was dead, breaking his heart as she took away the one connection he truly had. This left him in a state of sorrow, and frozen determination to do the last thing she asked of him.

Long live the Prince.

Simon returned, with the aid of his Lady's servants getting him back where he belonged, and he quickly used his skills and Contracts to establish a power base for himself. His fetch had inherited his family's real estate firm and holdings in his absence, and Simon arranged a bargain with the creature that he would help grow the firm even larger in exchange for cooperation. He was accepted to the Winter Court, telling them the truths they wanted to hear while lying only by omission. At that point, he began to build his influence.

While never one to sully his hands with blood, Simon was a strategist, and a master of manipulation. He rapidly amassed a huge fortune using the ability to see into the future, and to adjust his stock portfolios accordingly while avoiding the gaze of investigators. Using those funds he purchased housing and resources for the freehold, making sure other changelings had safe houses they could go to, smoothing the way toward acquiring false identities, and taking care of the costs of living when one has dropped out of the world. Though never fully trusted thanks to his easy smile, arrogant demeanor, and too-smooth answers, he was valued for the services he provided.

Simon's plan was to continue his acquisitions, and to make himself indispensable. To become what he had been under his Lady... a Prince. Alliances were forged with organized crime figures, money laundering operations were opened, and shell companies started in order to set other wheels in motion. Charity clinics were created to be used as fronts for body disposal, and to help changelings get medical care. Legal offices and representatives were acquired to provide cover from nosy investigators. Influence was purchased at political galas and fundraisers, ensuring that if Simon needed something to happen all it took was the right word in the right ear and it would get done.

He was not one of the Monarchs of the freehold, and in truth he had little enough desire to be one. Because he had learned a truth that few still truly understood; that the authority of the clenched fist was often far less persuasive than the debt of the open hand when it came to ensuring loyalty, and power.

Soft Power Gets Results

When most people think of power in a game, they tend to think of hard power. The character who kicks in a door, waves a gun in someone's face, or makes an explicit threat of violence is using hard power, coercing others to do what they want. Soft power, by contrast, is the use of cultural or economic influence to persuade someone else to do what you want. Soft power is using one's social position, greasing a palm with a bribe, or giving someone what they need in order to endear yourself to them so that, later on, they're more likely to side with you in a conflict.

This is usually discussed on the scale of nations, but you can break it down to smaller interactions as well. And it really helps in understanding how to achieve results in a setting like the Chronicles of Darkness.

Given that both World and Chronicles of Darkness are games of modern, dark fantasy, they deal with struggles in the huge, interconnected world we live in. And while there are always going to be small battles that will be fought in the small-scale, many of the chronicle plots involve looking at bigger problems that you simply cannot defeat solely through the barrel of a gun in a meaningful way.

However, through exerting soft power, you can often smooth out challenges, or overcome them entirely.

For example, if a Pentex subsidiary is causing problems in the local area, sure, you can blow up the refinery, or kill the mad scientists who are experimenting in there. It often means you'll just have a new facility with fresh faces moving back in, along with a bigger security team. But if you start up the rumor mill to create negative impressions in the media about the company's corruption, you tarnish their reputation, and create problems for them. If you get people who owe you favors on the planning commission, or in the permits department to review those cases in order to maintain their relationship with you, there might be further problems for the company. And even if you do need to eventually go in and kill the monsters being grown in the lab, that's easier to do when the tide of public opinion is already turned against the research facility, so if something bad does happen no one is going to leap to their defense.

The issue with soft power, though, is much the same as the issue with playing a support character; you don't spend a lot of time in the spotlight.

Soft power takes a lot of time to cultivate and grow in a game. It also tends to be done in downtime actions (whether you're at a tabletop or a LARP), and it can take a lot of XP to buy the dots you need in Resources, Allies, Contacts, etc. to back up your play. And then, when it does come time to wield that power, you do it by making a phone call, sending an email, or talking to a representative. It isn't as dramatic as a knock-down, drag-out brawl, or a contest of wills between potent magical beings, but more often than not it is this subtle ability to influence that solves problems neatly, and cleanly in a game known for being quite messy both literally and metaphorically.

There will always be a place for the blade, the gun, and the assassination. Spies, saboteurs, and enforcers are just as much a part of these settings as the monsters whose skins the players slip into. However, for those who want to try on the role of the velvet glove instead of the iron fist, it can be quite a rewarding experience.
